Hardtail vs. Full Suspension Bikes

Hardtail:  One shock in the front (fork)

Full Suspension:  Two shocks: front + rear

Quick Tip:   Choose hardtail for efficiency & lower cost  Choose full suspension for comfort & control

Analog vs. Electric Bikes

Analog:   100% human-powered

Electric:   Pedal-assist motor for extra boost

Quick Tip:   Choose analog for simplicity & lower cost  Choose electric for easier climbing & longer rides

Carbon vs. Aluminum Bikes

Carbon:   Absorbs vibrations for a smoother ride

Aluminum:   Strong, durable, & affordable

Quick Tip:    Choose carbon for performance & weight savings   Choose aluminum for durability & value

Hardtail Mountain Bikes

Simple • Efficient • Great for Beginners

A hardtail mountain bike has front suspension only - that means the fork absorbs bumps and roots, while the back of the bike is rigid. This design keeps things simple and efficient, making hardtails lighter, easier to pedal, and less expensive to maintain than bikes with full suspension. Because you feel more of the trail, hardtails help riders develop great technique and balance early on. They climb hills smoothly, handle quick sprints with ease, and perform best on smoother trails, gravel paths, and rolling singletrack.

Why you’ll love it: You get a great feel for the trail, strong climbing performance, and less bike to worry about maintaining.

Best For: Beginners, cross-country riders, and anyone who wants a fun, low-maintenance bike that’s easy to control and rewarding to ride.

Recommended Gear

  • Helmet: Lightweight trail helmet with good ventilation
  • Gloves: Padded for comfort on longer rides
  • Shoes: Grippy flat or SPD-compatible trail shoes
  • Accessories: Basic repair kit (multi-tool, spare tube, mini pump)
  • Optional: Dropper seatpost for easier descents

Full Suspension Mountain Bikes

Comfort • Control • Confidence on Rough Trails

A full suspension bike uses both front and rear shocks to soak up bumps, roots, and rocks from the trail. The rear suspension keeps the back wheel in better contact with the ground, improving traction, braking, and confidence when the trail gets rough. These bikes are more forgiving, letting you ride faster and stay in control on technical terrain. They’re a bit heavier and more complex to maintain, but the trade-off is worth it if you love exploring challenging trails or want to ride longer with less fatigue.

Why you’ll love it: It smooths out roots, rocks, and drops, so you can focus on enjoying the ride rather than hanging on tight.

Best For: Riders who want maximum comfort, control, and confidence when the terrain turns steep, rocky, or unpredictable.

Recommended Gear

  • Helmet: Full-face or trail-style helmet with visor
  • Pads: Knee and elbow pads for rocky or technical trails
  • Hydration Pack: For longer rides and storage
  • Shoes: Trail shoes with stiffer soles for better power transfer
  • Extras: Shock pump, cleaning brush, and chain lube for after-ride care

Enduro Mountain Bikes

Strong • Stable • Built for Big Descents

Enduro bikes are high-performance full-suspension machines designed for aggressive, technical riding. They’re built to handle steep descents, big jumps, and fast downhill sections, but they can still climb efficiently when needed. With longer suspension travel (typically 150–180 mm) and strong, durable components, enduro bikes are ideal for riders who want to push their limits and tackle the most demanding trails. These are the bikes you’ll see in enduro races and bike parks, where riders climb to the top, then descend at full speed.

Why you’ll love it: They feel stable and capable on big mountain terrain, perfect if you love the thrill of descending fast.

Best For: Advanced riders who love big mountain trails, enduro racing, or bike park days where every descent is an adrenaline rush.

Recommended Gear

  • Helmet: Full-face or convertible enduro helmet
  • Pads: Knee, elbow, and possibly back protection
  • Shoes: Sticky-soled trail or gravity shoes
  • Accessories: Dropper post, tubeless tires, chain guide
  • Extras: Full tool kit and spare derailleur hanger (for hard hits on remote trails)

Electric Mountain Bikes

Power • Range • Ride Farther, Climb Easier

An electric mountain bike looks and rides much like a regular MTB, but they include a battery-powered motor that gives you a boost while you pedal. It doesn’t do the work for you, but it makes climbs feel smoother and long rides more achievable. E-MTBs open up a whole new world of adventure: you can explore more trails, ride farther, and still have energy left at the end of the day. Whether you’re a beginner building fitness, a weekend explorer, or an experienced rider who wants to ride more often, e-bikes make mountain biking more accessible and fun.

Why you’ll love it: You can tackle bigger adventures, keep up with faster friends, and explore more trails without burning out.

Best For: Riders who want maximum comfort, control, and confidence when the terrain turns steep, rocky, or unpredictable.

Recommended Gear

  • Helmet: Trail helmet with good ventilation or lightweight full-face
  • Gloves: Durable, padded gloves for longer rides
  • Shoes: Stiff-soled shoes for efficient pedaling
  • Accessories: Spare battery (for long adventures), multi-tool, and tire plugs
  • Extras: Power meter or app to track battery range and performance
